The Lab Leadership Roadmap

Nine laboratory practice dimensions, each mapped to the lab role ladder and to the leadership dimension it feeds. Pick the rung you are working toward, see what is expected of you there and track the development moves that get you there.

The lab role ladder

Every dimension below shows what the work looks like at each rung. Select where you are heading and the expectations update.

Owns the bench for a shift: coverage, escalation, first-line problem solving.

Dimension 1 of 9

Pre-analytic specimen integrity

Collection, labeling, transport and rejection decisions before a specimen ever reaches an instrument.

Feeds Quality & Patient Safety
Expected of a Lead Tech

Coaches collectors and nursing in the moment instead of silently re-drawing.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Applies rejection criteria consistently and documents every deviation.
  • Technical Supervisor: Tracks rejection reasons by source and owns the corrective action.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Runs a standing pre-analytic workgroup with nursing and phlebotomy.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Holds service line leaders accountable for collection practice at their sites.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: specimen rejection rate · redraw volume · documented deviations closed
Dimension 2 of 9

Analytic procedure execution

Running methods exactly as written and knowing why each step exists.

Feeds Clinical Credibility
Expected of a Lead Tech

Verifies new staff execution on shift and corrects drift early.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Follows the SOP without shortcuts and flags anything the SOP does not cover.
  • Technical Supervisor: Keeps SOPs current and validates changes before they hit the bench.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Approves method changes with documented risk assessment.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Defends method selection and performance to medical staff.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: SOP review currency · observed competency pass rate · method deviation reports
Dimension 3 of 9

Quality control interpretation and response

Reading QC as a signal, not a gate to clear and responding before results go out.

Feeds Quality & Patient Safety
Expected of a Lead Tech

Makes the release-or-hold call on shift and documents the reasoning.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Recognizes shift and trend, not just fail and stops the run when needed.
  • Technical Supervisor: Reviews QC monthly, sets ranges and drives corrective action to closure.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Reports QC performance by section and resources the fixes.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Answers for QC performance in inspection and to the medical director.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: QC failure and repeat rate · corrective actions closed on time · held runs caught before release
Dimension 4 of 9

Instrument troubleshooting and maintenance

Keeping analyzers running and knowing when to escalate to service.

Feeds Unit Operations & Throughput
Expected of a Lead Tech

Troubleshoots common failures without calling the supervisor first.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Completes scheduled maintenance and logs it the day it happens.
  • Technical Supervisor: Owns the maintenance calendar and the service relationship.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Plans downtime coverage and tracks instrument uptime against contract.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Builds the capital replacement case with uptime and cost data.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: instrument downtime hours · maintenance completed on schedule · service calls avoided
Dimension 5 of 9

Result validation and critical value handling

Releasing results you can defend and getting critical values to a clinician who acts.

Feeds Communication & Escalation
Expected of a Lead Tech

Escalates unresolved criticals up the chain instead of leaving a message.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Correlates results with history and calls criticals with read-back.
  • Technical Supervisor: Audits critical value documentation and closes the gaps.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Sets the critical value policy and reports compliance.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Negotiates the critical value list and turnaround with medical staff.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: critical value call compliance · time to notification · clinician complaints
Dimension 6 of 9

Documentation and traceability

Records that let someone reconstruct what happened without asking you.

Feeds Regulatory & Survey Readiness
Expected of a Lead Tech

Checks the shift's records before handoff.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Documents at the time of the work, not at the end of the shift.
  • Technical Supervisor: Keeps competency and training files inspection-ready year round.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Audits documentation monthly and fixes the system, not the person.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Signs off on the lab's document control program.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: records complete on first audit · overdue competencies · document control findings
Dimension 7 of 9

Safety and biohazard practice

Personal, chemical and biological safety practiced when nobody is watching.

Feeds Composure & Resilience
Expected of a Lead Tech

Corrects unsafe practice on shift in the moment.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Follows PPE and spill practice every time and reports exposures.
  • Technical Supervisor: Owns the chemical hygiene plan and exposure follow-up.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Tracks safety events and closes environmental findings.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Represents the lab in the organization's safety program.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: exposure events · safety findings closed · drill participation
Dimension 8 of 9

LIS and data accuracy

The information system as part of the result: builds, interfaces and what the clinician actually sees.

Feeds Unit Operations & Throughput
Expected of a Lead Tech

Resolves common LIS errors on shift instead of routing everything to IT.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Enters and verifies accurately and reports interface mismatches.
  • Technical Supervisor: Validates test builds and reference range changes before go-live.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Owns the LIS change queue and its testing discipline.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Sets data governance with informatics and the EHR team.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: result correction rate · interface errors · LIS rework hours
Dimension 9 of 9

Regulatory and proficiency testing readiness

CAP, CLIA and PT handled as a continuous habit rather than a pre-inspection scramble.

Feeds Regulatory & Survey Readiness
Expected of a Lead Tech

Knows which standards apply to the bench they run.

  • Bench MLS / MLT: Treats PT samples exactly like patient samples.
  • Technical Supervisor: Owns a standards chapter and audits against it monthly.
  • Section / Lab Manager: Runs mock inspections and closes findings with owners and dates.
  • Lab Manager / Director: Holds the lab's accreditation and answers findings organizationally.
Development moves
Evidence it moved: open CAP/CLIA deficiencies · PT performance · mock findings closed in 30 days

Your first 90 days on the roadmap

Days 1-30
See your own practice honestly
  • Score yourself across the nine dimensions and mark the two lowest.
  • Pull the data behind those two: QC, turnaround, rejections, or documentation.
  • Name the role rung you are working toward and the gap between it and today.
Days 31-60
Practice the next rung with supervision
  • Take one decision that normally goes to your supervisor and make it, then review it.
  • Complete two development moves from each of your lowest dimensions.
  • Ask for one shift running the bench with your supervisor observing.
Days 61-90
Own an outcome end to end
  • Carry one section metric through a full corrective action cycle.
  • Present the result to your manager with the data attached.
  • Take the Clinical Leader Readiness™ assessment and compare it against this roadmap.

Measure the leadership side

This roadmap is practice and competency. The Clinical Leader Readiness Assessment™, laboratory setting scores the leadership side and returns a readiness band, dimension profile and a lab-specific 90-day plan you can run alongside these moves.
